8.00-Heat 12
Trap 1 Tyrur Lee WON 4/7
Trap 5 Who Needs Wings
Trap 6 Rio Tuxedo
* A cracking heat to get Fridays action underway. Paul Hennessy's Irish team is strong and he can expect his Newbridge Cox Cup champion Tyrur Lee to chalk up a victory. The son of Brett Lee completed a four race unbeaten run to land the 50,000 euro stake.
Seamus Cahill, formerly based at Wimbledon, has Who Needs Wings in great order. It's interesting to note the ante post odds of Rio Tuxedo 300-1 with Hills and only 80-1 with Ladbrokes. Is it because laddies odds compiler knows something we don't? eh Richard. (Finished last!)
8.15-Heat 13
Trap 3 Cobra Striking
Trap 6 Dilemmas Flight WON 6/4
Trap 1 Full Bloom F/C
*Express Ego put Cobra Striking in his place in the Juvenile at Wimbleodn in January with an exceptional run.
The Ernie Gaskin trained black has been a star performer at Walthamstow since winning the Videx Puppy Derby there last term. He has used his reliable fast breaks to lead and win races at Wimbledon and can do so again here.
The three dog would be vunerable to the Oaks champ Dilemmas Flight if he failed to gain two to three lengths down the back,
Full Bloom boasts fast times at Portsmouth and showed heart to beat Zigzag Dutchman in a trial stakes recently
8.30-Heat 14
Trap 6 Iceman Ross NAP WON 1/2
Trap 1 Cuil Tiger
Trap 3 Westmead Syd F/C
*Iceman Ross has been trained up nicely for this Derby campaign.
The black dog has hit the bar twice in two big winter events at Coventry running up 2nd to Reagrove Roe and Eye onthe Veto in the Winter Derby in December and the Emerald Cup in February .
Lance Burford, the trainer, will expect his tough and genuine runner to keep on qualifying through the rounds.
The dog certainly has the right frame of mind to keep doing that and judged on his fantastic defeat of Fear Me at Hall Green recently he can coast home in this heat. Locally trained runners with ace trap positions often get through at big prices.
Nora Macs Trap one runner will do for me here
8.45-Heat 15
Trap 1 Manic Mile WON 2/1
Trap 2 Rough Gerrard F/C
Trap 4 Wayward Ted T/C
* Manic Mile gets the nod on the class and draw factors. Graham Hutt's Scottish Derby finalist ran with credit in the Shawfield feature when fifth to Fear Haribo and boasts a decent record at Belle Vue where he won the Gorton Cup.
Rough Gerrard has taken a bit of time to mature. My gut instinct tells me he'll be the surprise package in this heat.
He's well related being a full brother of Derby contender Blonde Dino. I'm sure trainer Paul Garland will have him ready to do himself justice. Sure to improve on modest trial form. The home based dog-factor comes into play with Wayward Ted picked to qualify.
9.00-Heat 16
Trap 4 Blonde Dino F/C
Trap 2 Barnfield On Air WON 5/4
Trap 5 Westmead Nicole
*Simply an awesome winner of The Ladbrokes Puppy Derby title at Monmre in April. Historically a competition that has thrown plenty of Derby winners and finalists. John Mullins has this fast and strong greyhound primed for the Derby and proved it by winning his trial stakes in 28.67secs. I like him. Shame another class out fit Barnfield On Air is in the same race I like him too.
Obviously laid out for the Derby following a winters rest. Shaped with huge promise in the early rounds of The Emerald Cup when beating eventual winner Eye onthe Veto in 29.00secs (fastest time of the year) over the testing 480-metre trip. The come back trials are superb, 29.58secs (460m Wimbledon), (15.17secs (264m Monmore). This Irish Puppy Derby finalist is feared.
9.15-Heat 17
Trap 2 Express Comet
Trap 4 Vipar Totti
Trap 3 Fear Me
* Express Comet looks a ready made type for Wimbledon. I'd expect plenty of sizzling pace from the blue dog who won the Irish Sprint Cup at Dundalk last term. He's taken to outshine the talented Vipar Totti who shocked many with his explosive early speed throughout the Arc competition at Walthamstow where he was sent off 5-2 favourite to win the final. Big respect to Alison Ingrams' Romford rocket from trap 4.
.
9.30-Heat 18
Trap 1 Jaxerback WON 10/11
Trap 6 Swift Pirate
Trap 5 Fear Daniel
Jaxerback, who won the Tote Gold Cup consolation final at Shelbourne Park in March, may not be considered among the leading Irish raiders for the English Derby but his form at the Dublin circuit is solid enough. Top Honcho's son beat the massively talented Express Ego on route to posting 28.58secs for the 480-metre trip.
Swift Pirate can prove the defeat of Derby favourite Fear Haribo in the Trial Stakes last week was no fluke.
9.45-Heat 19
Trap 1 Rio Jericho (N.B)
Trap 4 Blonde Sheriff
Trap 3 Larkhill Jim WON 9/4
*Speculative punt on Rio Jericho is in order. Danny Riordan, a trainer never to be underestimated , is never far away from the money when one of his greyhounds gets a decent trap draw. Won over the course in February and showed signs of form again when runner-up to Snoozys Palace last week. Interesting to note it's the first time he wears the red jacket for over a year!
Blonde Sheriff can just about grab second off Larkhill Jim
10.00-Heat 20
Trap 3 Farloe Premier WON 11/8
Trap 4 Directors Wish F/C
Trap 1 Allenbuild Flyer
*Farloe Premier, as many of Charlie Listers ' top racers do, cut a dash at Nottingham when winning the Puppy Trophy final last December clocking 30.28sec over 500-metres . This daughter of Premier Fantasy then won a Guineas trial stake over the same course and distance three months later in 29.78sec. Improvement indeed. Not disgraced behind Go Edie Honda when third in the Grand Prix final at Sunderland recently over 640 metres. Obviously a candidate for staying honours later in the year. This trip may be a little too short for her but she's good enough to win a moderate heat.
10-15-Heat 21
Trap 6 Loyal Honcho Won 4/5
Trap 3 Big Brett Coal
Trap 4 Westcountry Lady
Fascinating heat to wrap things up. Once again the Irish form looks good enough for punters to trust Loyal Honcho in six.
You would expect a two or three length improvement on his 29.04 trial over track and trip last month.
Big Brett Coal is another who will feature in the main six-bend tournaments later in the year.
The Seamus Cahill trained dog was bidding for an eight-timer going into the Test Final at Walthamstow last month but ran down behind the classy January Tiger. |
